A focus on healthy ageing

A focus on healthy ageing by Clare Whitworth, blog header. Woman lifting weights to right of title.

I mentioned in my first blog that health was going to play a big part in my overall focus for 2023. The goal is that my health journey will feed into my relationships, my thirst for fun, and my holistic wellness journey. Here’s some insight into my health journey for this year…

Creating a healthy lifestyle has been a focus for me for many years. But as I’ve gotten older, my health journey has turned into one with a focus on healthy ageing.

Over the years, I’ve had different focuses, from running to yoga to PT. And, like many, I tend to ramp things up to get back on the wagon after holidays or periods of indulgence. But, for the most part, my health journey has become a way of life.

My main focus over the years has been to keep moving, in whatever form that might take. However, as I delve into 2023 as a mid-fifty-year-old woman, I’ve realised the importance of maintaining strong bones, joints and muscles as we age.

Strength training is crucial to supporting these areas of our body, and aiding in keeping our bone density strong.

Beginning this year, my routine now consists of strength training three times a week, twice with the help of a personal trainer, and once on my own. Alongside this I fit in a run/walk twice a week for a cardio hit that is also always good for the soul.

After this year’s festive season, I committed to an eight week weight loss challenge with Mikki Williden, coined ‘Mondays Matter, Shreduary Edition’. I signed up with my husband, Gordy, and while I haven’t stuck 100% to the plan, it’s been a great tool for helping me get back into the zone of health and wellness.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about fitness and eating healthily, it’s that consistency is key. It’s impossible (for most) to maintain unrealistic eating plans or training programmes, but as long as we keep showing up, we’re moving in the right direction.

What is your health and wellness focus this year? I’d love to hear about it. Let me know in the comments below.
